Questions people ask
What does a farm fire unit need?
The CFS Farm Fire Units Handbook sets the minimum for a registered unit. The vehicle must be registered and roadworthy, have a UHF CB radio, stay under its gross vehicle mass (the most it may legally weigh when loaded) and carry drinking water. The load must be secure, and the pump and tank must be in good working order.
The CFS also recommends a first aid kit with a burns kit, a woollen fire blanket and a rotating amber light. It registers the vehicle and operator, so talk to the CFS about registering yours.
How big should the tank be on a ute?
The CFS Handbook does not set a size, so it comes down to what your vehicle can legally carry. Water weighs about 1 kilogram a litre, so a 1000 litre tank is about a tonne before you add the skid and pump. Check your gross vehicle mass first.
Is a skid unit better than a fire fighting trailer?
The CFS discourages trailer units because of how they handle, their stability and crew safety, and nobody should ride on one. A skid unit sits on a ute tray or tractor forks instead.
Is there a farm fire unit grant?
The CFS runs the Regional Capability Community Fund, which has helped farmers buy new units. The 2026-27 round closed to new applicants on 18 September 2026. If you hold an offer from that round, you must buy between 26 October and 7 December 2026, and only what your offer approved.
