NL Welding and Fabrication repairs and rebuilds trailers and trays at our workshop in Nairne, South Australia, or on site if the trailer cannot be moved. A recent job was a cage gate where the upright had cracked around the weld. We replaced it with a new length of slightly thicker steel to take the work that trailer gets.

Why trailers crack where they do

Trailers shake and flex on every trip. Cracks usually start at welds and where two pieces of steel meet, and water sitting between them starts rust. That was the story on the cage gate above: it had cracked around the weld, with rust between the two pieces of steel.

Repair it or rebuild it

Sometimes a single weld does the job. Sometimes the steel has had enough and a new length is the better fix. Send us photos of the damage and of the whole trailer or tray, and we will tell you which it is.

We had replaced the upright with a new length, that was also slightly thicker to take the abuse and the workload that this trailer gets used for.

Bring it to the workshop in Nairne, or we come out to you and fix it on site.

Questions people ask

Can you weld a trailer frame?

Yes, trailer frames can be repaired by welding. The whole crack has to come out first, and steel that has rusted thin is better replaced than welded over. Send us photos of the damage and the whole trailer, and we will tell you what the job needs.

Does welding my trailer affect its registration?

There is no simple yes or no. In South Australia any alteration or modification to a trailer has to be lodged with Service SA on form MR7, and trailers over 4.5 tonnes are treated as heavy vehicles with their own rules.

If a job changes the trailer's structure, brakes or size, check with Service SA before the work starts.

Why does my trailer rust at the weld?

Welding burns off the coating beside the weld, and water sits in the gap where two pieces of steel meet. That is what happened on the cage gate on this page: it cracked around the weld, with rust between the two pieces of steel.

How much do mobile welders charge?

It depends on the job. What changes the cost is how complex the job is, the metal, the time on site, the travel, and whether it is urgent or after hours.

We do not list prices because every job is different, but our quotes are free. Send us a photo and we will work out what it needs.
